Term time holidays hit one million
Further to a ruling by the Supreme Court that made taking children from school during term time illegal, one million children were taken on holidays mid term.
As such last year saw the highest number of unauthorised absences on record.
Data released yesterday seemed to suggest that the publicity generated by the court case spectacularly backfired as parents took advantage of cut price, term time, holidays. Hence 1,047,480 pupils went on unathorised holidays during 2017 / 18.
This number is double that of five years ago.
The increase in holiday absences followed an extended legal battle between the Isle of Wight Council and a gentleman called Jon Platt who took his daughter on a trip to Disneyland, Florida, without the schools permission
The matter went to court and the Supreme Court, following a ruling by the High Court, ruled that even half a days absence was a breach of the law.
It seems that thousands of parents booked holidays as Mr Platt won a series of legal victories on the way to his defeat at the hands of the Supreme Court.
Consequently the number of parents fined for their childs poor attendance has risen by 74.7% in the previous 12 months. Comment made by the Department For Education said that absence from school was a "society wide challenge" that "we all need to work together to resolve".
