Ray Cameron, dad of well-known British comedian Michael McIntyre, shot himself in 1993. However Michael was told by his step mum, his dad died of a heart attack on a morning walk.
The suicide had been a family secret for years until his stepmother Holly revealed the secret.
Holly admitted, Michael, 38, had already put her on a "three strikes and you're out" warning and her decision to speak out would be the final straw.
Friends of the multi-millionaire comedy star said he feels betrayed by Holly's decision to release the information publicly.
In a statement, Michael said, "I'm heartbroken my stepmother has chosen to share painful and personal information publicly."
The truth was revealed to Michael in 2010, when he planned to appear on the BBC family history show, Who Do You Think You Are?
Holly was positive the truth would be revealed to Michael, if the team of researchers unveiled his dad's death certificate.
In Mr Cameron's last wishes he wrote, "I cannot tell you what to say to the children... My instinct is to shield them if you can."
