Intelligence agency GCHQ is to open a new Manchester base to put the city at the "heart of the nation's security."
GCHQ said the opening of the base in 2019 would create hundreds of new jobs for the region.
From its new premises, GCHQ will work with MI5 and MI6 to fight terrorism, global threats and organised crime, "using cutting-edge technology."
GCHQ currently has headquarters in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, with additional offices in Bude, Cornwall and Scarborough, North Yorkshire.
Its origins date back to World War Two when code breakers based at Bletchley Park provided essential intelligence to defeat the Nazis. Currently GCHQ has a workforce of around 6,000.
Speaking about the new base, Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council, said:
"This announcement will create hundreds of jobs and represents a huge vote of confidence in the potential talent pool of employees in and around Manchester.
"GCHQ perform a vital role in helping to keep the country safe and we look forward to welcoming them to the city in 2019."
Jobs at the new Manchester office are due to be advertised later this year.
