A house has come on the market for just £5,000, on a street which can lay claim to being the cheapest in Britain.
The last houses to sell on Limetrees Close in Stockton-on-Tees sold for £8,500 and £9,000, giving an average price of £7,500 if the latest offering sells at auction for its expected guide price of £5,000.
Land Registry figures for the last year show that the average price for a property on the street is £16,714, a figure 16 times lower than the national average house price of £273,000.
Locals explain that vendettas in the neighbourhood have been settled by houses being firebombed, and how gangs roam the streets in flatbed trucks collecting "scrap metal" including electricity meters.
The two bedroom semi-detached is being auctioned in Leeds and has a lounge, kitchen, bathroom, and gardens to front and rear. A house of exactly the same specification in Charlton, SE7, is currently on sale for £300,000.
House prices in Teesside generally are among the lowest in the UK, and last year it was revealed that Middlesbrough had suffered the biggest annual fall in house prices in England and Wales, with a drop of 16.5 per cent from the previous year.
