8 Billion luxury development at Battersea Power Station

The iconic chimneys of London's Battersea Power Station are crumbling and putting its' £8 billion development project into jeopardy.

As plans for the 39 acre site which has sat on the banks of the Thames for more than 80 years are already underway.  Developers are concerned about the state of its' four imposing chimney stacks.

English heritage together with the Battersea Power Station Development Company now plan to knock down and rebuild each of the 103-metre chimneys which are in danger of decay.  Fears for public safety and delays to the multi-billion pound project are growing.

Work looks set to begin to take down the four pillars which have been a feature of the London skyline for decades.  Rebuilding and repainting is scheduled for completion by 2016.

Originally designed by British architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the designer of the red telephone box and the man who brought us London's Waterloo Bridge.  Battersea finally ceased operation as a power station in 1982 and the chimneys have borne the brunt of 50 years of service and a further 30 years of dereliction.

With a multitude of attempts to revive the ailing structure in the last three decades, the Grade II listed building now owned by a consortium of Malaysian investors looks set for a bright future as the next phase of the development is unveiled on May 1st.

As more than £600million worth of property has already been sold in phase one, guide prices range from £1million for a one-bed apartment, three bedroomed homes start from £2.7million and if you want a penthouse, it's prices upon application.

For those of us who can't afford to buy a property on the Battersea development, once finished we can still enjoy the revived architectural splendour.  Visitors can enjoy a landscaped six-acre public park, 200 shops, restaurants and leisure facilities and finally around 5000 office workers will also be taking up residence.
