Holidaymakers risk being stung for thousands of pounds if they fall ill abroad this summer even if they have travel insurance – because they are sent to the wrong hospital.
Travel insurers are warning tourists that many resorts in Spain, Greece, Cyprus and Turkey, automatically send guests to private hospitals when they need treatment. All because they then receive a referral fee from the hospital.
But most travel insurers – including the Post Office, Thomas Cook and Insure and Go – do not cover treatment in private clinics and hospitals. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) also does not cover private medical treatment.
The dilemma for tourists who require treatment is that many do not know which hospitals are private or public, and in many cases the decision of which facility to attend is taken out of their hands completely.
Tom Bishop, head of travel insurance at Direct Line, says unofficial 'referral agreements' are common. He said:
"Holidaymakers in need of emergency care and unable to speak the language are often helpless. Many are referred straight to private hospitals when they go to their hotel for help, despite public services being available locally."
