Rochdale has the highest rate of alcohol-related road traffic accidents in the North West, according to new data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
In 2016, the average rate of accidents where at least one driver failed a breathalyser test was 26.0 per 1,000, nationally. That figure rises to 29.3 per 1,000 across the North West a whole, and rises again to 39.9 per 1,000 when the Rochdale borough is looked at in isolation.
Across England and Wales, the alcohol limit for drivers is 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, 35 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath, or 107 milligrams per 100 millilitres of urine.
Elsewhere, Cornwall recorded the highest rate of drink-drive road accidents per 1,000, with a figure of 48.7.
The other regions to make up the top 10 were Wiltshire, Shropshire, Torbay, County Durham, Redcar and Cleveland, Herefordshire, Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire.
If a person is found guilty of drink driving they can face a fine, driving ban, and even a prison sentence in the most serious offences.
