Phase One of the Rochdale Riverside development, set to begin in summer 2017, is going to 'transform' the town's centre, developers say.
The development will include a new department store for Marks & Spencer to relocate to, alongside 13 other retail units with potential for mezzanine levels.
There will also be a new, two-decked car park and the creation of 50 cycle parking spaces.
A new central retail street will be created to angle across from 'The Hub' at Smith Street to a public square – Baillie Square – at the entrance to the Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre.
It is hoped the development will bring employment opportunities, increased footfall to Rochdale, and economic prosperity to the businesses already established in the town.
As well as the retail and leisure developments, Rochdale Riverside will also include 100 apartments in the heart of the town centre, plus a new 100 bedroom hotel and various small office units.
The building of Phase One is expected to last 19 months, beginning in summer 2017, and will be opened in early 2019. Phase Two will feature the office, hotel, and residential uses and is expected to take 24 months to complete.
