Members of a Rochdale paedophile gang received more than £1 million pounds in taxpayer funds in order to fight deportation proceedings.
In total nine men were jailed in 2012 for sex offences, including rape, against underage girls in Rochdale. Of the nine, four were from Pakistan.
The ringleader, Shabir Ahmed, claimed that moves to strip them of their citizenship breached their human rights. They were subsequently granted legal aid to appeal the UK decision to the European Court of Human Rights.
Ahmed was given a 22 year long conviction for his crimes whilst also claiming that a conspiracy was in place due to his religion. The UK's most senior immigration solicitor, Mr Justice Bernard McCloskey, described the tactics of the four as "weakening the rule of law".
Two of the four have subsequently received £1,003,783 in legal aid to this point.
MP David Davies commented, "Their crimes were despicable. They should not have received any of that money".
