Pothole Action Fund to Help Improve the Region's Roads

Rochdale Borough Council is to receive £121,000 from the Government to improve local roads. The money is expected to be enough to repair around 2,300 of the region's potholes.

The cash is the result of the £250million Pothole Action Fund included in last month's Budget. The funding each area receives is calculated according to the overall size of the road network in the area.

Potholes can be a hazard for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike, and local authorities currently pay out more than £30million per year in compensation claims due to poorly maintained roads. Potholes can cause damage to vehicles, present a trip hazard, and cause whiplash and other neck injuries.

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin, said:

"I know how important well-maintained roads are to people across the North West. Almost every journey starts and ends on a local road, so the government is giving councils in the North West £6.4million specifically to tackle the blight of potholes in their area.

"This is just one part of our unprecedented investment in local road maintenance over the next five years. We are giving a record £625million to local authorities in the North West that will support the Northern Powerhouse and improve journeys for all."
