A high court judge has ordered a son who has become embroiled in his parents £450 million divorce to attend a trial or face the prospect of jail.
Tatiana Akhmedova says her 65-year-old ex-husband, billionaire businessman Farkhad Akhmedov, has hidden assets. She has also taken legal action against their 27-year-old son Temur Akhmedov after accusing him of acting as his father's "lieutenant".
Mrs Justice Gwynneth Knowles was due to start examining allegations against Temur at a remote trial in the Family Division of the High Court, but the start of the trial was delayed after the judge was told that Temur was in Russia, and no longer represented by lawyers.
The judge adjourned the trial and ordered Temur to attend to give evidence, saying that if he did not attend, he could be in contempt of court and face prison or a fine. Temur, who disputes allegations made against him, spoke to the judge via a video link, said he would subsequently attend.
Asked why he travelled to Russia, Temur said he had been trying to get a loan to pay legal fees and "got scared". He added, "It's a lot of stress. I am being sued by my mother. I am drinking a lot." He also suggested that he had nowhere to stay in London, saying, "I am not going to call my mother, saying can I come and live in your house, although you are suing me?"
In 2016 Ms Akhmedova was awarded a 41.5 per cent share of Mr Akhmedov's £1 billion-plus fortune by another judge. She has so far received £5 million and says that Mr Akhmedov has not "voluntarily" paid anything.
