Latest figures show British motorists are increasingly turning to technology to help tackle the increasing cost of insurance fraud.
Research by the vehicle CCTV and telematics specialists Vision Unique Equipment (VUE) reveals that 71 per cent of drivers believe that introducing in-car cameras would help cut bogus car insurance claims.
The firm claims that it has seen a significant reduction in fraudulent insurance claims since fitting the technology in thousands of fleet vehicles around the UK. Their research has also shown that two in five drivers are considering fitting an in-car camera to private vehicles.
Many so-called "crash-for-cash" fraudsters have witnesses on hand to claim that the crash was the other driver's fault, enabling them to make an insurance claim for damage to the vehicle, as well as claiming compensation for whiplash or other injuries.
CCTV technology can record the events leading up to an accident, as well as the aftermath of the incident, even when the engine is switched off. The footage may also be used in court, helping to bring such fraudsters to justice.
