Council's Decision Is 'Abdication of Responsibility'

A council's decision to force schools to foot the bill for crossing patrols has been called 'crazy' and  an 'abdication of responsibility' by critics.

Currently the Council meets this cost but plans are afoot to transfer the responsibility to schools. Local Liberal Democrat leader Councillor Kelly is now joining teachers and governors in criticising the decision.

Each patrol currently costs £4,533 per year, and with many schools requiring more than one crossing point, Councillor Kelly argues that schools are now being put in an impossible position.  Councillor Kelly said:

"This is just another example of poor decision making and lack of prioritising at the Council. By trying to force schools to pay for these patrols, the Council is showing a scant regard for the safety of our young people and putting head teachers and governors in an impossible situation."

Councillor Kelly now plans to raise the issue at the next meeting of Rochdale Borough Council, and has also discussed the matter with road safety charity 'Brake.'

"'Brake' tell me they have their Road Safety Week from 21 – 27 November. It would be great to send a clear message that safety is a priority of the Council by reversing this crazy, ill-informed decision by then."
