A commuter has been paid almost £28,000 in compensation by Network Rail after slipping on pigeon droppings at Paddington Station in London.
The passenger had hurt his leg after slipping within one of 20 stations managed by Network Rail. As a result, he was awarded £27,602 in compensation.
This is not the first time that a passenger has been awarded compensation after slipping on bird faeces at a train station in the UK. A freedom of information request by the BBC reported that four individuals have been given compensation for similar incidents since 2014.
One commuter was awarded £365 after slipping on bird droppings at Leeds Station. Other incidents resulted in two people given £500 and £889 respectively after slipping at Waterloo Station in London.
Network Rail's head of claims and insurance, Philip Thrower said: "We're a big company that takes our responsibilities seriously. With tens of millions of people using our stations every day; only a tiny fraction of a per cent experience a mishap.
"If we are at fault for causing damage or injury to anyone, we rightly compensate them for those accidents and put in place new ways of working to stop them from happening again."
Almost £1million has been paid out by Network rail for 290 claims over the past five years. This includes individuals who have slipped on bird droppings, lost their footing or slipped on an uneven surface.
The amount of compensation awarded has ranged from £10.00 to £40,000. The largest amount paid was £40,000 after a passenger "slipped on some liquid and landed heavily on their right hip" at London Charing Cross.
£10 was paid out to an individual who slipped on ice at London's Victoria Station and suffered "personal injury and damage/messing to suit".
One passenger who slipped on an uneven surface at Euston Station whilst walking towards a train was awarded £17,000.
