According to campaigners for housing, Greater Manchester's homes are dated, not fit for purpose and not meeting the current demand for housing in the region.
To address this, a rally was held yesterday in Manchester City Centre by members of the Home for Britain campaign who called for more houses to be built to end waiting lists and to help first time buyers get in on the property market.
The campaign is being supported by housing associations, architects, planners and developers and Coronation Street actress Julie Hesmondhalgh, who joined yesterday's rally. She said:
"That people should be entitled, that it should be people's right to decent affordable housing is a massive issue."
Katie Teasdale, the rally's organiser, said:
"The problems are partly a lack of supply and housing not being in the right places.
"We have an ageing population, first-time buyers can't afford homes and we have an ageing housing stock.
"The average salary is around £22,000 but to buy in Greater Manchester currently you need to earn around £30,000 and prices in areas like South Manchester are well beyond peoples' take home pay.
"We need to increase the supply of homes and that will also bring prices down."
