The terminology was recently changed, as of the 29th July 2013, and Compromise Agreements are now referred to in the legal profession as Settlement Agreements.

Employers will sometimes offer a compromise, severance or settlement agreement (all three terms meaning the same thing) when terminating a persons employment.

The basis of the agreement is that your employer will offer you a financial inducement or other incentive beyond your contractual obligation. In return you agree to waive any employment related claims against your employer. 

The benefits are that the employer avoids a costly, time consuming, claim that may attract poor publicity. And for the employer, if the agreement is properly negotiated, you would receive more than your Contract entitles you too.
