Violent deaths in London passes 2018 milestone

London recorded 133 violent deaths in 2019 after the capital accrued it's 133rd victim. The latest caualty was a man in his twenties who was stabbed to death in East London.

2018 was the deadliest in 10 years when 132 people were murdered in London, yet this year has surpassed that figure with the festive season still ahead.

These statistics show that 2019 is the bloodiest since the numbers recorded in 2008 when 154 homicides were recorded.

In 2002 there was a spike in violent deaths in the capital, with 221 recorded, but the figure then began to steadily decrease. In 2014 the number of muders and homicides was 94.

Unfortunately knife crime and shootings have led to a sharp increase in the more recent statistics And this comes against a backdrop of repeated attempts by the Police to drive down knife crime.

Recent initiatives include Stop & Search powers plus Operation Sceptre, which allowed the voluntary handing in of weapons, have failed to curtail the London murder rate.

Additionally the London Metropolitan Police have created the Violent Crime Task Force which is intended to take a proactive approach to taking knives off the streets.

From a statistics perspective approximately 45% of killings happened after 6pm. Around 37% of the deaths occurred in the morning with the remainder being between noon and 3pm.

The London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, told the press, "I regularly meet bereaved families and hearing from those who have lost loved ones is utterly heartbreaking. These deaths are not statistics. Every one of them matters and their loss is felt in homes, schools, work places and communities.
