A policeman has suffered life changing injuries following a drunken attack when a man bit off his ear.
PC Steve Fisher sustained the injury when he and colleague PC Daniel Gildersleve were called to a domestic disturbance in Hertfordshire.
The officers arrived at the home of 43 year old Rex Gardener after a 999 call was made by his ex-partner on August 15 last year and found that Gardener had been drinking heavily.
During their attempts to assess the situation, the constables were subjected to a sudden bout of violence from Gardener when he hurled PC Fisher into a table and bit part of his ear off.
Despite his injuries PC Fisher bravely regained control of the situation and together with his colleague they managed to protect Gardener's girlfriend from the violence.
Gardener was convicted and jailed for causing grievous bodily harm with intent to PC Fisher at St Albans Crown Court this month. The court heard how the officer needed surgery for his injuries and will be left with a life-long scar.
Speaking of the verdict, Detective Inspector Jon Dick spoke about the sentencing, saying, "This attack was outrageously violent and totally unprovoked".
"PC Fisher and PC Gildersleve had attended the address to provide support to a vulnerable victim of domestic abuse and the traumatic events of that night I'm sure will live with them for a very long time".
