A recent report from a prison watchdog reveals a staggering drug crisis in jails, with up to three-quarters of inmates testing positive for drugs. The chief inspector of prisons expressed shock at HMP Hindley, near Wigan, where the positive test rate soared to 77% earlier this year.
Other prisons are also reporting that over half of their inmates have been caught using drugs. This alarming trend coincides with a rise in organized crime gangs using drones to smuggle substances into correctional facilities.
At the annual conference of the Prison Governors' Association, Mr. Taylor emphasized the need for increased investment in security measures, such as better gate security, reinforced windows, and advanced technology to thwart drone activity.
Watchdogs report that these gangs are exploiting the high demand for drugs in prisons, as they can command enormous mark-ups on their sales. In one instance, inmates went so far as to dismantle their kettle to create an opening in their cell windows, allowing drones to drop in drugs and mobile phones, which are then used to coordinate further drug smuggling.
