Speeding driver kills 5 year old boy

Speeding driver Wayne Payne killed a 5 year old boy while driving at more than twice the speed limit a court heard this week.

31 year old Payne was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court to 5 years in prison and slammed with a 5 year driving ban.

The jury took just 45 minutes to deliver the guilty verdict as Payne was convicted of death by dangerous driving.

5 year old Cameron Ward lost his life as he returned from a family Easter party last year, helped along on his bike by dad John Ward, Cameron was struck by Payne's car from behind.

The Daily Mail reports that Payne's car was travelling at 61 mph in a 30mph zone in Birmingham's Erdington area.  The court heard that Payne did not brake and Cameron was flung into the air.

Despite the efforts of paramedics, Cameron could not be saved and although Mr Payne was said to be remorseful and claimed he tried to swerve, his car only came to a halt when he lost control and hit a parked car.

The Court also heard that Payne had previous drug convictions in addition to fixed penalty notices for using a mobile phone while driving,
