A recent freedom of information (FOI) request has revealed a 15 percent increase in the number of citizens over 60 being arrested for assault in Nottinghamshire.
The rise in crime committed by elderly citizens, which has left many campaigners for the old feeling shocked, has been blamed on austerity by some. New crime figures also highlighted an increase in drink driving, sexual touching and theft in those approaching pension age.
David Jones, secretary at Nottingham Pensioners' Age Group, said:
"I am stunned by these figures. An analysis must be made as to why there has been an increase because it is very concerning.
"It sets a bad example to the younger generation and older people should know better than to go around committing crimes. And some of the crimes are very serious. Levels of austerity could well be a factor. People can do some pretty desperate things when they have to. But there is no excuse for it."
In 2014, 59 citizens over the age of 60 were arrested in relation to drink driving, 14 were arrested for sexual touching and 90 were arrested for other offences.
