A top Nottingham surgeon who operates on young victims of knife crime has spoken out about the city's epidemic.
Adam Brooks, 48, is the divisional director of surgery at the Queen's Medical Centre, and says the hospital sees around one life-threatening stabbing every three days.
Nottinghamshire Police say that around fifty per cent of stab victims are reluctant to inform the authorities due to fear of being "a grass" or "a snitch." This means that although 125 stabbings were reported last year, the actual figure could be much higher.
Mr Brooks said:
"We get 200 stabbings a year which is assaults with knives. The more revealing factor is every month we have nine patients in the trauma room with serious injuries, so every third day we have a patient here with a life-threatening wound from a stabbing.
"We think over the last five years that has gone up, nearly double from what it was. A lot of them are young people in the 15 to 25 demographic. Carrying a knife is becoming normal for a number of people and if you carry a knife you are more likely to use it."
Craig Guildford, Chief Constable of Nottinghamshire Police added that "Tackling knife crime is a priority."
