Man fakes his own kidnap

A man has been jailed after faking his own kidnap in order to extract ransom money from his girlfriend.

Mohammed Khan of Burntwood, Staffordshire, even sent pictures to his partner apparently showing the injuries inflicted on him. In fact the injuries were fake, and had been painted onto his body with make up.

The fake kidnapping happened over five days during October last year, and Mr Khan managed to con £1,200 out of his partner Surrena Lilly.

Khan was caught out after Lilly contacted the police following a demand for a further four-figure sum. Officers arrived at Khan's home to find him safe and well. His mobile phone contained text messages threatening to hurt Mr Khan, and several picture messages showing the fake injuries.

Neil Skinner, defending, said "This is an unusual offence. He did owe people money and there was a lot of pressure to pay those people back. What he did then was use his position in his relationship to obtain money in the way he accepts he did. Maybe he could have asked her for it."

The court heard the couple have since split up, and Khan has been jailed for four months after pleading guilty to fraud at Wolverhampton Crown Court.
