The Nottinghamshire Police are launching a knife crime strategy in order to fight knife crime and knife-related violence. 11 police officers will be assigned to specific schools at a cost exceeding £500,000.
Recent studies show that offenders who commit serious violent crimes were often caught with a knife at the young age of 11.
The police school liaison officers will educate pupils on the dangers of carrying knives and the long-term implications of possessing weapons, as well as changing the mindset of pupils.
The Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping, commented:
"We know we have got a problem with knife crime. It is a real threat – a threat to people who are attacked, and a threat to people who carry a knife. It is about identifying these young people before they pick up a knife, and then to intervene to give them support to show there is another way."
Nottinghamshire Police Chief Constable, Craig Guildford, said:
"Their main aim is to provide information, offer choice and to explain consequences. Their full-time job will be going into schools. There will be 11 dedicated officers across the force which is an investment of over half a million pounds. The long-term goal is to give young people information upon which to make rational decisions to keep themselves safe."
Detective Superintendent Simon Firth, manager of the knife crime strategy said:
"Knife crime is not the problem, it is the symptom. It is about identifying those people who are at risk and involved in youth violence, to look at their specific needs and then help to provide the support they need to turn their lives around."
