Air rage 2020

Air rage woman jailed

A woman has been jailed for trying to storm an aircraft cockpit whilst screaming, "I'm going to kill everyone". She has been sentenced to two years at Chelmsford Crown Court.

Ms Chloe Haines, 26, attempted to force open the cockpit door on the Jet2 plane before proceding to assault a member of the cabin crew during the flight from Stansted to Turkey in June 2019.

Haines, of High Wycombe, wept as she was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to endangering the safety of an aircraft and assault by beating.

Prior to the incident the young woman had been drinking from a 200ml bottle of gin stashed in an overhead locker.

During the trial Judge Charles Gratwicke said, "Those that are trapped in the confined space of the aircraft will inevitably be distressed, frightened and petrified by the actions of those who in a drunken state endanger their lives. For some it will be their worst nightmare come true."

Whilst the incident was unfolding the aircrew summoned support and two RAF Typhoon fighters were scrambled to escort the Airbus 321 forty five minutes into its flight.

The supermarket worker tried to pull open the exterior aircraft door, whilst inflight, before passengers and crew pinned her down to subdue her. Her behaviour also saw her screaming, punching, singing and crying.

By return, during the case, Haines claimed that she "blacked out and didn't really remember what happened" after mixing alcohol with medication, prosecutor Michael Crimp said.

The airline, Jet2, fined Haines £85,000 and banned her from flying with the airline for life. To this point Miss Haines, who has also been disqualified from driving, and is unemployed, has been unable to pay the fine.
