Shocking new crime figures have revealed more than 350 crimes have been committed in Derby's parks in the last three and a half years.
The figures, which were obtained through a Freedom of Information request by the Derby Telegraph, have highlighted the shocking reality of crime levels in Derby's parks with the majority of incidents, which include 11 rapes, assault, drug dealing and drug trafficking, taking place in Markeaton, Normanton and Arboretum parks.
A spokesman for Derbyshire police said:
"Anti-social behaviour continues to be an issue in Derby parks. The current issues at Arboretum Park are nuisance motorbikes and drugs. Police in the area are aware of the issues and are taking steps to tackle them, including carrying out extra patrols and working with partner agencies."
Ashley Waterhouse, of the Arboretum Neighbourhood Board, said:
"These figures are quite shocking and disturbing. It's worrying to see them presented like that and it's obvious there is a problem for drug dealing on the park."
Members of the public and volunteers who use the park for sports clubs and activities have called for the parks to be made safer, with some suggesting lockable gates to secure the parks at night.
