In a £1.3 million government scheme thousands of prisoners suffering drug and drink addictions are to be given iPads for Zoom therapy sessions.
Offenders will be given the iPads to get live counselling, videos of detox programmes by drug and drink treatment specialists, and Q and A sessions across 86 prisons.
Led by prisons minister Alex Chalk, the initiative is an attempt to tackle the drugs crisis and reduce demand in jails "at source" after a £100 million Ministry of Justice investment in external measures to combat drug smuggling through X-ray scanners, sniffer dogs and drones.
Mr Chalk said, "We know one of the great drivers of instability in prisons are drugs. We need to use technology as a way of addressing the problem at source."
An analysis of data by think tank Reform found the number of inmates developing drug problems has more than doubled in five years, with figures increasing from 6 per cent to 15 per cent between 2014 and 2019. One in seven prisoners is becoming addicted to drugs.
