A once serene location in Chesterfield has been locked up and can no longer be accessed by the public, after it became a hotspot for antisocial behaviour and drug abuse.
The Chesterfield Borough Council-run Garden of Fragrance, near the town hall, has been fenced off with no definite reopening on the horizon.
Councillor Chris Ludlow, the borough council's cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said:
"The garden on Rose Hill had unfortunately become a hotspot for antisocial behaviour – we believe due to illegal drug taking.
"The decision was not taken lightly but the garden was suffering repeated damage which we had to put right using money raised in council tax.
"We do not enjoy closing off our green spaces, which we know give pleasure to our residents and visitors. We will continue to review the decision and will open the garden again when we are satisfied it is safe to do so."
The news comes amid a spike in concerns about anti-social behaviour in that area of the town, and last month alone, the Chesterfield war memorial was damaged on three separate occasions.
