Three men have been jailed after admitting a charge of badger baiting, despite no badger carcass being found.
Brothers Kyle and Daniel Green, along with Martin Skinner, were stopped by police as they drove through Darley Dale, Derbyshire.
The police officers discovered two "badly injured dogs" in the back of the vehicle, and the animals were in serious need of veterinary treatment.
Analysis of blood recovered from the dogs, as well as from the car and the suspects' clothing, was revealed to be that of a badger. The men were then charged with badger baiting, despite no carcass being recovered.
After initially pleading not guilty, the three men changed their pleas on the first day of their trial. They have now been jailed for three months and are banned from keeping dogs for five years. The injured dogs have been rehomed.
PC Andrew Shaw, who led the investigation, said:
"Derbyshire is a haven for wildlife and unfortunately certain members of society choose to target the wildlife we have in our county.
"The sentences these men have received, together with the police investigation, show just how seriously we treat wildlife crime and I hope it will deter others from committing similar acts of extreme cruelty in the future."
