Swindon Crown Court heard how a woman stole her parents' entire life savings totalling more than £150,000 to fund her own gambling habit.
When 32 year old Kate Morton took control of her parent's finances, she systematically drained their life savings over a period of four and a half years.
Initially denying the offences, Morton eventually admitted six counts of theft devastating her family and leaving her parents with nothing.
During the court hearing, it was revealed that Morton's father John Wilmot received a substantial pay out following a crash in 1999 when he received brain injuries which left him unable to work.
Following Mr Wilmot's injuries, his wife Jacqueline obtained Power of Attorney due to his poor memory but then in an unfortunate twist of fate, she also suffered a brain bleed and later the onset of dementia.
Kate Morton took advantage of her parent's inability to deal with the family finances and began to make electronic payments to her own account together with cash machine withdrawals.
The Daily Mail reports that Morton's parents have been left with no savings which would have been used to pay her mother's care fees as she is now suffering from full dementia.
Stealing a total of £154,840.34, Morton has left her father heartbroken but Mr Wilmot is thankful that his wife does not understand the extent of their daugher's crime.
