A leafy Surrey suburb famed for its wealthy residents has been dubbed the 'Beverley Hills of Britain'.

The affluent borough of Elmbridge has once more topped the tables as earners living there pay the highest levels of income tax in the country.

With famous names like Elton John and Ronnie Wood making Elmbridge their home, even Andy Murray has chosen to settle further along the Thames, away from London's bustling capital.

According to a Mail Online report, Elmbridge boasts a reputation as a 'stockbroker belt' area, one of the top 28 towns in the South-East housing the highest tax payers.

As Elmbridge takes the title for a second year running, residents there are reported to have paid a colossal £1.8billion in tax last year – more than Newcastle and Cardiff combined.

A hotspot for the rich and famous, Surrey's popularity increases as the number of Chelsea football stars scoop prime properties there for easy access to their nearby Cobham training ground.

The results of a survey were published this week by accountancy firm, UHY Hacker Young revealing that residents paid 3 percent more tax than the previous year.

Head of Private Client Services, Mark Giddens says, "The government is increasingly reliant on the wealthier parts of the South Eastern commuter belt and London for income".

The survey also highlighted that residents of Blackpool pays the least amount of income tax in the UK.
