Peterborough has bucked the national trend by recording another drop in unemployment figures, with the East of England currently setting the second lowest unemployment rate of any UK region at 4.5 per cent.
The number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) in the city dropped by 6 per cent, with 145 less claimants in June compared with 2,400 claimants in May. Of those 2,255 claimants, the number of people claiming JSA aged between 18 to 24 fell from 570 to 524.
Julia Nix, district manager for East Anglia at JobCentre Plus, said:
"It's really encouraging for East Anglia and especially Peterborough to buck the national trend.
"We continue to support employers and give jobseekers the skills they need to fill vacancies."
In the past year, the total number of claimants in Peterborough fell from 3,705 to 2,400 despite national unemployment-related benefits rising by 7,000, from 797,200 to 804,200.
