Divorce Monday

According to experts, Monday 6th January was the bleakest day of the year – so far!!  Apart from the winter blues, the weather is nothing in comparison to the mountain of debt and divorce claims filed on this day.

Fondly known as 'Divorce Monday' by solicitors up and down the country, early January sees a spike in the number of divorce applications, closely followed by a further peak in September.  As relationships face increasing strain over the Christmas holiday period, cracks appear and couples seek a divorce lawyer with the advent of the New Year.

Statistics show that around 1.8 million couples have argued over the festive season from alcohol fuelled fights to rows about the children and in-laws.

In a Daily Mail interview, Chief Executive of Relate, Ruth Sutherland explained "New Year is a time many of us assess how life is going and this can make people think about how a relationship is faring."

Divorce Monday or blue Monday as it is also known used to peak at the end of January as the Christmas bills began to roll in but the date has crept forward as social media has grown in popularity and experts have measured the number of negative posts during the first working week of January.

On a more positive note, spring will soon be upon us – it's time to dust off the cobwebs and get your life back in shape.
