The Civil Partnership Act came into force on December 5th 2005. It paved the way for the UK's first gay 'marriages' on Wednesday December 21st.
In 2011 there were 6,795 partnerships. This was an increase of 6.4% since 2010.
According to figures released by the Office for National Statistics there has been a rise in the number of civil partnerships in the UK. Overall, since the legislation came into force, there have been 53,417 civil partnerships.
The changes gave same-sex couples the same legal rights as married couples however the term "marriage" can not be used for same sex relationships.
The majority of dissolutions, which sees the end of a civil partnership, were done by female couples.
In general the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that there were slightly more male than female civil partnerships.
ONS figures prompted a spokesman for gay rights campaign group Stonewall to say: "It is evidently fantastic news that so many people have entered civil partnerships and that they have proved so popular."
