Plans for London-only Work Visas Following Brexit

EU nationals currently working in London should be given a visa allowing them to continue working in the capital following Britain's departure from the European Union, the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has suggested.

There are also calls for the government to designate London as a "targeted migration area" in order to manage the capital's significant labour requirements.

The government has not yet announced what visa regime will apply to EU migrant workers after Britain exits the EU, but if the current visa system were extended to EU migrants, three quarters of the UK's EU workforce would not meet the requirements.

Colin Stanbridge, chief executive at the LCCI, said:

"Immigration has underpinned London's economic, social and cultural development over centuries, making it the great city it is today.

"In the approaching post-Brexit scenario, for London to remain competitive, we need to not only recruit the very best but also to be able to identify where we have skills shortages and act swiftly to address these."

Last month, the City of London Corporation also proposed allowing local councils to allocate "regional visas" for migrants across the UK, in an attempt to address local businesses' local skills shortages.
