Thousands of people could soon have to swear an oath to "British values" under plans put forward by a Conservative minister.
The pledge, which is expected to cover elected officials, civil servants and council workers, was originally suggested in a report two weeks ago.
Now, Communities Secretary Sajid Javid has revealed he is "particularly drawn" to the proposal from integration tsar Dame Louise Casey.
The Sunday Times claimed a plan for all migrants would be unveiled in the spring. Writing in the newspaper, Mr Javid said:
"If we are going to challenge such attitudes, civic and political leaders have to lead by example.
"We can't expect new arrivals to embrace British values if those of us who are already here don't do so ourselves, and such an oath would go a long way to making that happen."
It is thought an oath could include phrases such as "tolerating the views of others even if you disagree with them."
Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott has hit out at the plan, saying:
"I have a very diverse population in Hackney – they're living in London, they're living in this country because they value what this country has to offer and they respect its institutions.
"I don't think the oath will make any verifiable difference."
