There are thousands of employment redundancies each year, and with the current state of the economy, although steadily recovering, it could happen to any of us.
More companies are turning over lower figures each year and making cuts in the number of employers is one way of saving money.
If you are being made redundant you may be entitled to the following:
Your employer should be fair and objective in the way they select individuals for redundancy. Most commonly they select the employees with the shortest length at the company or those with the least skills or experience.
Many also announce to the staff they will be making redundancies and give them the opportunity to volunteer to leave.
An employer is unable to select employees for redundancy based on age, gender, race, if they are disabled or pregnant. If you were unfairly dismissed from your job, you are entitled to appeal and seek legal advice about your rights as an employee and whether you can claim compensation.
You must have worked 2 years or more before you're entitled to statutory redundancy pay.
