The female driver of a BMW involved in a collision with a row of parked cars during a police chase in Sale on December 3 has tragically passed away, confirmed authorities.
Emergency services responded to the significant collision on Marsland Road in Sale at approximately 8:30 pm. The BMW, pursued by officers for failing to stop nearby, crashed into several parked cars along the roadside. Fire crews worked to extract two individuals trapped inside the vehicle, who were then swiftly transported to the hospital. A substantial cordon was established as investigations into the incident unfolded.
The matter has been referred to the Greater Manchester Police's Professional Standards Directorate and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
The IOPC, undertaking an independent investigation, has reported that the female driver succumbed to her injuries in the hospital. Meanwhile, the male passenger remains in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
An IOPC spokesperson stated, "Following a referral from Greater Manchester Police, we have started an independent investigation into the circumstances of a fatal collision in Sale, Greater Manchester. We were notified by the force that a police vehicle had attempted to stop a BMW driver at 8:25 pm last night (3 December) on Homelands Road. The BMW made off and collided with a parked car on Marsland Road after a short pursuit by officers. Our thoughts are with all of those affected by this tragic incident. Our investigation is in its very early stages."
According to a GMP spokesperson, the events unfolded when officers in a police vehicle attempted to stop a vehicle at approximately 8:20 pm in Sale. The driver failed to stop, leading to a brief police pursuit. The pursued vehicle then collided with a row of parked cars on Marsland Road. Enquiries are ongoing, and road closures have been implemented. Standard procedures include referrals to GMP's Professional Standards Directorate and the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
