New Development Could Help to Fund Housing Association Block

Green space and woodland could be flattened to make way for 100 private flats so a Manchester housing association can raise the funds to carry out urgent repairs on a neighbouring block.

The eight-storey Canon Green Court in Salford was built during the 1950s and is in need of major renovations, including sorting out a damp problem

Salix Homes, which manages the block, says it needs to build a new seven-storey block next to Canon Green Court in order to raise the funds for the revamp. The proposed development will involve ripping up part of the grounds of the existing flats, including green space and a coppice.

In a statement, Salix said:

"The proposals will transform the appearance and living facilities of the block and includes the construction of an additional 100 units on the site to help fund the essential improvement work residents have been calling for.

"The initial designs propose an additional multi-storey apartment block is built within the grounds, while the current block will undergo a major facelift including new kitchens, bathrooms, heating systems and external wall insulation."

The final proposals are being finalised and will be presented to Salford Council for planning permission. It is hoped that work will begin later this year.
