Manchester Police Satnav Tweet Sparks Debate

A tweet advising where drivers should place their satnavs has sparked a fierce debate on social media.

Greater Manchester Police's traffic unit shared an image showing where drivers are advised to place their satellite navigation systems. The image showed the device places to the bottom right of the windscreen.

The accompanying tweet said "The only legal place to put one is on the bottom right hand side of your windscreen. Like the attached picture, everywhere else is illegal."

But many Twitter users said they place their satnavs near the rear-view mirror, which GMP confirmed is in fact legal, so long as it does not obstruct the view ahead.

There is no actual legislation in the Highway Code stating where devices should be placed, as long as it does not cause an obstruction. It goes on to say that drivers are unlikely to be pulled over if the satnav is on the windscreen, barring a ridiculous placement of the device.

However, motorists may be committing an offence if they are seen to be distracted by their satnav devices while behind the wheel.
