Manchester Law Society Announces New President.
Mike Devlin has been elected as the Manchester Law Society's next president.
Devlin's takes up the position before he retires from practising next year; he is currently head of the firm's family law division and is based at the Manchester office. Devlin, has stated that he beleives Manchester Law Society is in good shape. "We have a very strong council with members from a broad area of firms, practices areas and age groups, from those just starting out in their career to those reaching the end," he said.
"There has been a very consistent group of officers for the past ten years, with a wealth of experience and Fran is the glue that holds all of this together. We are in a good financial position and the education programme is first rate, Manchester Law Society has become a very highly respected law society both locally and nationally and it really is an honour to be President and I am delighted that Michelle Garlick will be my Vice President. She is a prominent member of the MLS Council and a renowned expert in the field of regulation and compliance."
One of Devlin's themes for the year will be to encourage young people from all social and ethnic backgrounds into the profession.
"Access to Justice is not just about having access to the law or to legal advice, it's also about opening the profession to people from all parts of society," he said. "We want Manchester to move to the next level and to do that we need to encourage those from all backgrounds to join the profession. There is a huge untapped potential on our doorstep and we need to find ways of opening the profession to all."
