Last year changes to immigration law meant that in order for British citizens to bring a partner over to the UK from a non-European country they had to prove minimum earnings of £18,600.
In order to sponsor a child the minimum earnings amount is increased to £22,400. This is an amount which the cross party group claim is higher than the average wage. The result of this has meant that many families are currently separated including parents being separated from their children.
It has also been highlighted that these rules do not take into account differences in wages in different parts of the UK, discriminating against families in the North whose average salaries are lower than that in the South.
