Be prepared this winter - Preston Accident & Personal Injury solicitors

The northwest has been hit with a barrage of severe weather in the recent weeks including the most recent downfall of snow this week.

The Highways Agency are warning drivers to prepare themselves and their vehicles as we expect even more severe weather.

More than half of drivers ignore warnings for driving in severe weather and the majority do not prepare their vehicle for winter.

It's common for drivers to rely on the roads being gritted but this does not necessarily mean the roads are safe.

Drivers should take a few minutes before a journey to check their vehicles. For longer distance, if there is ice or snow on the roads, plan ahead with any alternative routes. You should also prepare for any road accidents or breaking down by carrying essentials in the boot of your car.

To ensure your car is ready for winter, the agency has provided the following tips.

  • Petrol - ensure you have enough.
  • Oil - Check levels are correct once a month.
  • Water - Check the radiator and screen wash regularly.
  • Damage - Check the wipers, lights etc for any damage. Before you start any journey make sure your windscreen, lights and roof are clear. Driving with snow on your roof is extremely dangerous as there is a danger of it falling into your windscreen.
  • Electrics - check lights, breaks, indicators and controls are working properly.
  • Tyres - Check they are well inflated, legal, with good tread and free from damage.
  • The Driver - are you fit to drive? Make sure you have warm clothes and suitable footwear if you do need to leave your vehicle at any point.
