A fifth of personal injury firms expected to close

Following the closure of Blakemores law firm last month, it is estimated that a fifth of Personal Injury Law Firms based in the North-West may be closing their doors.

Liverpool law firm, O'Connors, who provides business advice to other law firms, found that there were many firms considering closing down since the SRA implemented the ban on referral fees earlier this month.

Without the aid of claims management companies to supply them work, this could be a difficult time for smaller firms and those who only specialise in personal injury claims.

Over the course of the year, it is claimed that as many as 100 thousand jobs could be lost as law firms and claims management companies begin to close.

Significant changes to the way compensation claims are handled will also affect those suffering from serious injuries. People will soon find it harder to claim compensation or even the claim amount they deserve.

Before 1 April this year, there was great speculation as to whether the referral fee encouraged an unwarranted amount of unnecessary claims for road traffic accidents.

Insurance companies have argued that by reducing the costs they are paying to claimants' lawyers in compensation fees, will eventually reduce the size of insurance premiums. However, lawyers have disagreed and suggested that the changes will only increase the size of insurance company profits.
