Yorkshire Employment Level Falls Below National Average

An employment survey carried out by a Sheffield recruitment company has revealed job prospects in Yorkshire and the Humber stand below the national average.

Manpower, which released its Employment Outlook Survey recently, revealed that the region's employment growth of 3 per cent fell short of the national average of 4 per cent for the fourth consecutive quarter. The survey, which garnered responses from 2,101 UK employers, asked whether they intended to hire additional workers or reduce the size of their workforce in the coming quarter.

Amanda White, operations manager at Manpower, said:

"It is disappointing to see the jobs outlook in Yorkshire and the Humber continuing to lag behind the national average.

"Although the outlook in the region falls below the UK as a whole, we shouldn't forget that the picture is still positive. In particular, we are seeing strong demand for employees in the manufacturing sector, and for call centre workers, with particularly fierce competition in Sheffield and Leeds."

Manpower's data suggests employers are already feeling the impact of the national living wage, which will see 6 million people receive a 6 per cent pay rise each year until 2020, and are scaling back their recruitment plans in the fourth quarter of 2015 as a result.
