South Yorkshire Employment Set to Rise in 2016

South Yorkshire is set for a boost in employment next year as unemployment falls further and employers continue to create new jobs.

As the number of people in Sheffield claiming Jobseekers' Allowance drops by 1,410 in 2015, Job Centre bosses predict a further fall in unemployment in 2016. Over the past year, a fall of 13 per cent now means there are 9,115 claimants living in the city, with similar results in Doncaster and Rotherham, both of which fell by 15 and 18 per cent respectively.

Nigel Coleman, an employer account manager at Cavendish Court job centre in Sheffield, said:

"It has just been incredible. The last 24 months have been consistently very encouraging.

"Employers in all sectors are wanting to do stuff. We are getting every industry out there knocking on our door."

The UK employment rate has reached a record high of 73.9 per cent nationally, however, the Unite union say the fall in unemployment may be masking a continued rise in self-employment and low paid part-time jobs.
