Business chiefs have called a meeting in Sheffield to debate the crisis in the nation's steel industry.
The Institute for Mechanical Engineers Yorkshire Region have organised the free event at Cutler's Hall on Wednesday June 15. The public is welcome to attend the meeting.
The meeting comes after Tata shed 550 jobs at its South Yorkshire-based speciality steels business last year. A panel of experts including Andrew Douglass, the engineering director from TATA Speciality Steels, and Andrew Denniff, the chief executive of Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, will discuss the topic.
Audience members are encouraged to submit questions for the panel beforehand, and are also welcome to ask questions during the evening.
A spokesman for the IMECHE said:
"The recent announcement by Tata to sell its loss-making UK steel plants has sent shockwaves through the industry.
"The decision brings with it a large amount of uncertainty regarding the future of UK steel making which affects many aspects of UK life.
"Chinese steel imports, tariffs, low demand for steel in the UK and high energy costs, coupled with high business rates and environmental taxes, are squeezing the industry.
"Could we envisage a UK without a steel industry?"
