Liverpudlian factory workers strike over sick pay

Hundreds of workers at Jacobs Liverpool biscuit factory are striking over sick pay after a row with the company.

Members at the Jacobs factory backed the walkout by 84% and have been planning strike dates with the union.

Stuart Fegan, national officer of GMB, said, "Senior management of United Biscuits have issued a letter to all employees at Aintree unilaterally suspending the company sick pay with immediate effect and advising the workforce that they are looking to source the products manufactured at the Aintree site elsewhere."

The company, United Biscuits, who are the makers of Mcvities and Jaffa cakes have been bought by a Turkish food group for a £2bn price tag.

New owner, Yildiz, is investing in the Middlesex firm which employs over 4000 employees in the UK.

Chairman of the company, Murat Ülker, said, "We want to grow United Biscuits to be a global player as part of Yildiz. This will include enhancing its position in the UK, where Yildiz currently has minimal presence, so we will continue to invest in the UK and Europe."
