A decline in the number of Sheffield residents receiving Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) has been attributed to a bounce in the jobs market across South Yorkshire.
The city, which saw a reduction of 3,215 claims for Jobseeker's Allowance during April 2015 compared with the same month in 2014, had a total of 10,281 claims in April of this year.
The drop in JSA claimants across Sheffield, which amounted to 24 percent, was also present in other areas across South Yorkshire. Rotherham and Barnsley both saw a decrease of 26 percent, down to 5,081 and 4,025 claims respectively, while Doncaster saw a decline of 22 percent, down to 6,288 JSA claims.
Nigel Coleman, employer account manager at Cavendish Court job centre in Sheffield, said:
"We are seeing a real bounce. Perhaps we were hit more when the recession was on and are bouncing back quicker."
"There are some zero-hours contracts out there and there is a place for them to give employers that flexibility. More and more often people are being offered permanent contracts from what starts as a zero-hours contract."
There has been an overall reduction in Jobseeker's Allowance claims of 40 percent across South Yorkshire during the past five years, contributing to a wider pattern of positive growth in employment across the whole of the UK.
