Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker joined hundreds of campaigners who marched through the streets of Sheffield to protest against the city council's controversial tree-felling programme.
Thousands of the city's trees have already been felled as part of the £2 billion resurfacing plan. The scheme has led to frequent clashes between protestors, the council, and police.
Organisers of Saturday's march said it was designed to show the council and Amey – the contractor carrying out the work – that the protestors show no sign of giving up their fight. The work has currently been paused with the authority citing 'increasingly dangerous tactics' from protestors as the reason for the decision.
Speaking about the march, Jarvis Cocker said:
"It's great, it's made me feel very proud of Sheffield. I don't spend as much time as I used to in Sheffield, but I'm saluting you.
"Chopping down trees at 4am is a little bit surreptitious, you're obviously not sure if what you're doing is right."
Last month the 54-year-old performed a DJ set to help raise funds for two protestors who owe £27,000 to Sheffield Council for breaching a High Court injunction which banned activists from standing directly beneath threatened trees when being felled.
